In the past few weeks I spend some time into the major internet marketing forums. Besides the great information I've found there, I was surprised by one of the topics and I believe that I have to share with you my impressions.

That topic which put my mind on thinking was simple yet very complicated. Unfortunately, people get caught into a big trap. To make my story as short as I can, the question was something like that:

"Which marketing strategy is the best to apply for an internet business?"

Now, I'm sure you recognize here a newbie worry. Truth is, beyond that simple question there are very complicated answers. What was really interesting is another thing. Fellows' netpreneurs jump on that particular topic with different suggestions.

Every response to that post proclaim and acclaim one single strategy, but no one came with certain results and no one argue the motives. Some talk about email marketing, other people suggest search engine ranking, or joint venture, autoresponder follow-up, and so one...

I don't intend to go deep down into the difference between "strategy" and "tactic" on the marketing field, even some people may needed.

It just dawned on me today how funny those posts are. I have to admit that I'm somewhat amused by all of the persons that are currently trying to right their sinking ships by "monetizing" their web sites.

First and foremost, you have to understand that behind every business there are only people. And people are very different - the same thing applies to their businesses. Every online business - I mean a successful one! - has his own way.

It has something unique which make it to stand out of the crowd. That's why a business is successful! And the way to make it big is the same. Those people with an incredible success online apply unique strategies and tactics to promote their businesses.

Do you want to know one of their secrets? Well, they are successful because they built a powerful system which allow them to test different approaches on the Internet before their competitors. And they NEVER rely on a single marketing strategy!

They also apply the secret of ever-growing that simply can't be stopped: MULTIPLICATION. Believe me, this is one of the most overlooked and important secrets of being successful online. They will NOT touch anything that does not multiply on its own!

I write CLIENTS not customers, because upon your marketing skills, they will come month after month to buy from you instead of your competitors.

When somebody buy the product from you, download and read it, he click on your links. And you get credit for every order and pick up a percentage from the sale as an affiliate.

This is very powerful! It will allow you to gain an extra profit without lifting a single finger. No needs to purchase advertise, no need for targeted traffic or search engine optimization! Everything works on auto-pilot.

And this is something that simply can't be stopped: MULTIPLICATION!

Even better, there will be clients which won't purchase full resale rights. Just the product himself. This will give you another chance: to allow them to offer the product to THEIR clients/subscribers as an incentive or bonus.

Back in the old days of dirt roads and horse-drawn wagons, folks lived with a brutal code of justice. Public hangings... lynch mobs... street beatings... If you got caught doing something you weren't supposed to be doing, you'd watch your back.

You didn't have a choice. Justice came quickly. Fool around with someone's girl? That's a great way to get a rope tied around your neck. Swift and brutal.

Recently, the online marketing community witnessed its own public lynching of sorts. They found a Man who had wronged them. Not once. Not twice. Repeatedly. The Man sold a book. And he sold it for a pretty penny. Most of his customers didn't like the book. They felt it was worth far less than the pretty penny they had paid for it. So, they asked for refunds.

The Man ignored them. They asked again. The Man continued to ignore them. Mention of this was made on public forums. At first, customers asked for advice. "How do I get a refund?" they cried. Then, others joined in. The lone voices became a chorus. And the distant rumblings of malcontent grew louder.

On one forum, an Associate of The Man surfaced. He offered an explanation. It was not enough. The crowd, sensing weak prey, gathered. Then, they attacked. For some time, The Associate held them at bay.

But, soon, his strength waned. The crowds were too strong. And their numbers, too many. With hands stretched to the sky, The Associate disappeared under a wave of anger. Blood was spilled. But, still... The Man hid.

"Where is The Man?!" the crowd howled.

"Show yourself!" they roared.

Yet, The Man remained hidden. In the silence, the crowd bristled with anger. They wanted answers. They wanted an explanation for The Man's actions.

They wanted justice. Left with only the pulse of their own fury, the crowd surged forward. They began to tear apart The Man's reputation. With claws sharpened on the stone of their rage, they ripped and slashed until there was nothing left...

Today, only the memory of what happened exists. Young ones still ask eagerly, "Tell me about The Man." Yet, in the haunted eyes of those who were there during that fateful time, the darkness of the memory lives on. Those who participated in the carnage walk the streets and avoid each other's eyes.

There was no need to remind each other of their sins. For they would live with the secret. It would not go away.It would not forgive them. They had destroyed a reputation. Viciously and without remorse.And though The Man may have deserved such treatment, they were not proud of what they did.

They had acted under the guise of justice. The cloak of false virtue. They had reassured each other that what they had done was right. But, in their hearts, they knew the truth. Their lust for blood had betrayed them.

Lessons from the fall: Stephen Ducharme (The Man in the story above) made several mistakes. Let's look at each of them briefly...

1st Mistake: Too much hype
His sales letter promised the world. From several accounts, his ebook couldn't deliver on those promises. He may have done what he claimed. But, did his ebook show other people how to do it? I've heard that the early version of his ebook wasn't even complete at the time it was being sold.

    Fix-it Tip: Sell. Don't hype. There's a difference.

2nd Mistake: Holding those refunds
He ignored refund requests. Not smart at all. Relationships, credibility and responsiveness.

    Fix-it Tip: If your customer wants a refund, give it to him. 'Nuff said.

3rd Mistake: Staying silent
Ever wonder why politicians can't stay silent when their opponents sling a fistful of mud? It's because public perception is fickle. Silence implies acceptance. It will bury you.

    Fix-it Tip: If you're being attacked, offer an explanation. Don't defend. Explain. Again, there's a difference.
