Proofs

Purchasing traffic from the pay-per-click search engines is one of the most profitable and effective ways to drive targeted traffic to your website. Unfortunately, pay-per-click engines prove to be a hidden trap for people that bid more than a visitor is actually worth to their site.

Allow me to prove that. I'll take as a reference the pay per click search engines service from Overture and Google's pay per click AdWords Select program. Here are some of the reasons that make this Pay Per Click Package far superior:

    1) Both Overture and Google's AdWords Select program have a minimum bid of 10 cents (and continue to increase). However, for most of the popular search terms, you can expect to pay a LOT MORE than 10 cents if you want the #1 spots in Overture and the top spot in Google.

No matter how popular the keyword or keyphrase are, you will only pay 7 cents for every UNIQUE visitor!

    2) Most search engines which display results from Overture at the top of their search results clearly label these sites as "Sponsored Sites" or "Featured Sites" or something similar.

In Google's AdWords Select program, the sites appear in a different color in the right of the screen. Consumers are increasingly become aware (and will become even more aware) that these are nothing but advertisements. Whenever human beings see an advertisement, they know that they are going to be given a sales pitch for a product or service, which immediately makes them suspicious.

In contrast, since the domain that this company will optimize for you will be displayed as part of the regular search results in the search engines, no such negative connotation will be associated with it. As a result, you are likely to see a far greater conversion rate (i.e. the number of people who buy from you as a percentage of the total number of visitors to your site) if you use this service rather than the pay per click search engines.

    3) In order to ensure that the visitors you are getting from the pay per click search engines are as targeted as possible, you can use the Title and Description of your listings to weed out those who are unlikely to order from you.

However, both Overture and Google limit the size of the Title and Description, which means that you are limited on how much you can do to attract only targeted visitors. On top of that, there are some search engines that take results from Overture which will only display the Title of the listing and will only display the description when the visitor takes the mouse pointer over the site's listing. This ensures that a large number of untargeted visitors will make their way to a web site using the pay per click search engines.

When a user clicks on that listing, Overture will deduct 26 cents from your account. Now, when most people search for something to buy from the Internet, they don't look at just one site, they look at multiple sites to see which site has the best offer.

It is quite possible that a user will click on to your site through your Overture listing, look at what you have to offer, go back to the search engine from which he had come to your site, check out the other sites, and if he finds your offer relatively attractive compared to the other sites, he might again click on your Overture listing to come back to your site. In this case, Overture will again deduct 26 cents from your account for the same visitor.

However, using Pay Per Click Package, you are billed for UNIQUE visitors only, rather than per click! Thus, no matter how many times the visitor clicks on the links from their domain to your web site, you will only be billed once for that visitor.

Economic Management

Now let's move forward and try to ask to a simple question: "How to save thousands of dollars and increase your Net Profits with pay per click search engines?" Let's get deeper into the pay per click area and analyze how much a customer worth for you. It's quite simple but you must understand each step.


    A) Conversion Rate, or how many UNIQUE visitors you need to close ONE sale.

Unique Visitors / Total Number of Sales = Conversion Rate

Example: Your web site received 10,000 unique visitors, and you sold 100 vacation packages.

10,000 Unique Visitors / 100 Sales = 1,000 Unique Visitors Per Sale

So in this case, your conversion rate would be equal to 1,000 (you close 1 sale for every 1,000 visitors to your website).


    B) Net Profit Per Sale, or how much profit you earn on a single sale.

(Gross Revenue - Total Expenses) / Total Number of Sales = Net Profit Per Sale

Example: If over the last month, you sold 100 vacation packages for $500 each, your gross revenue would be $50,000 (100 X $500). And let's presume your total expenses (production, packaging, web host fees, etc...) for the month are $10,000. It means you have:

($50,000 Gross Revenue - $10,000 Total Expenses) / 100 Sales = $400 Net Profit Per Sale

This is "in your pocket" profit per sale.


    C) Visitor Worth, or how much a single visitor is worth to you.

Net Profit Per Sale / Conversion Rate = Visitor Worth

Example: This is the easiest part. Just take the Net Profit Per Sale we calculate in part "B" ($400) and divide it by the Conversion Rate we calculated in part "A".

$400 Net Profit Per Sale / 1,000 Conversion Rate = $0.4 or 40 cents

So in this example, each visitor to your web site is worth $0.40. It means you can afford to pay as much as $0.40 to attract one new visitor to your web site without losing money. And 10,000 Unique visitors will cost you $4,000.

The next logical step is to go and bid for your keyword with Overture. Hey, but Overture will ask you $0.78 for the #1 spot under "Travel" keyword and you are not sure that 10,000 Unique Visitors will came from 10,000 click through. The results are that you can bid for maximum 0.40 and get a lower spot on Overture or Google.

Lower spot = Less targeted visitors = Small profits!

What would be IF you were using the Pay Per Click Package? Considering the same data's as above, 10,000 targeted visitors will cost you only $700.

You save in this case: $4,000 - $700 = $3,300

With these savings, you can run almost 5 new pay per click campaigns. Or target 50,000 new and UNIQUE visitors. Of course, for the same keywords/keyphrases you choose.

What about your profits? We'll consider the same case as above and presume your are making a $20 (ppu) net profit for every single sale you are generate from your web site, with a response rate of just 1% (rr).

----> Using A Pay Per Click Search Engine Program (like Overture):

      Net Profit = $4,000 - 10,000 (visitors) * 0.01(rr) * $20(ppu) = $2,000


----> Using The Pay Per Click Package:

      Net Profit = $4,000 - 50,000 (visitors) * 0.01(rr) * $20(ppu) = - $6,000

Obviously, with the same money, you can increase your Net Profit by 300% if you're using the Pay Per Click Package!

Weaknesses

The major disadvantage of the Pay Per Click Package when you compare it to either Overture's or Google's pay per click programs is that, with the Pay Per Click Package, it will take at least 2-3 months before you start seeing an increase in traffic to your site (that's how long it generally takes to get web sites ranked at the top of the search engines). With Overture, your site will be displayed within 3-5 days and with Google's AdWords, almost instantly.

Anyway, a useful strategy you can follow if you want to drive more traffic to your web site right now is to order the Pay Per Click Package and also open accounts with Overture and Google. Then, in about 2-3 months, once you start receiving traffic from the new domain they will create, you can simply stop advertising using Overture and Google.

Another disadvantage consists on the period of time you receive those 10,000 unique visitors. Obviously, this is closely tight to how targeted is your search engine traffic. A good start is to check what is your keywords traffic potential and how big is your web site response rate.

If you run a website which offer a cookbook in German language, I would say you target a very small niche market. Perhaps the selling potential is good, but if you get an average of 10 clicks a day from every search engine (and you have 11), your Pay Per Click package will send all the paid traffic to your web site in about 90 days or 3 months.

The Bottom Line

You have to be SURE you position the product or service you sell and choose your keywords/ keyphrases that way you'll get back the right amount of targeted visitors.
