Conversation With Google CEO Eric Schmidt

On August 9, 2006 Danny Sullivan, the man behind the Search Engine Watch web site have a conversation with Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google.

The conversation was at that time live on the Internet through Webmaster Radio FM.

Here's some quotes from Eric comments:

"Well, remember, our fundamental goal is to derive the most accurate search results. That is the paramount goal. That's more important than any of the other things that we're talking about. So we always make these decisions based on coming up with that perfect result to that query that the end user gives."

"AdSense for Content has far exceeded what we thought it could do. And what we're particularly excited about is that a large number of people who did not have an opportunity to make money based on their ideas, their information, their hard work – often [these are] very, very small operations, one person, two people – now at a minimum have enough money to fund their data center work, the computers that they need, their specialized tools, a little bit of an income. In some cases it's even much more successful than that."

Do You Struggle Against Mediocrity?

Have you heard of the movie "Factotum"?

It is based on a Charles Bukowski story and starring Matt Dillon (Henry Chinaski), Lili Taylor (Jan), Marisa Tomei (Laura), Fisher Stevens (Manny), Didier Flamand (Pierre), and more.

Published when Bukowski was in his mid-50’s and starting to reach a wider readership, "Factotum" presents the age-old struggle of man against mediocrity.

Henry Chinaski alias Matt Dillon, is the heroic survivor of countless benders, brawls, rejection slips, crazy women and soul-killing, mind-deadening jobs.

(What's new about that?)

I was just reading the review in the N.Y. Times, and came across this great Bukowski quote:
"How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed" — there is, naturally, a scatological dimension to this list — "brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?"
In "Factotum" Henry answers this most reasonable question mostly by trying to avoid working -- or at least working too hard, for other people.

Today I have something very special!

It's the birth of a new area on the Internet Profits Blog called "Online Storytellers".

The first story is about how Robert Murdoch bought MySpace. This article was written by Spencer Reiss and appear on Issue 14.07 - July 2006 of Wired Magazine.


Got time for a chat? Murdoch asked. Sure. When? How about now?... and the rest is history!
Twilight of the media moguls? Not for this guy. With the $580 million purchase of MySpace, News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch is betting he can transform a free social network into a colossal marketing machine.

Perched on the edge of a bright white power sofa on the supernaturally quiet eighth floor of the News Corporation’s global headquarters, the last thing Rupert Murdoch looks like is a fire-eyed revolutionary. Starched cuffs. Courtly manner.

A month past his 75th birthday. But then he starts talking. "To find something comparable, you have to go back 500 years to the printing press, the birth of mass media -– which, incidentally, is what really destroyed the old world of kings and aristocracies. Technology is shifting power away from the editors, the publishers, the establishment, the media elite. Now it’s the people who are taking control." And he’s smiling.

Hold on a minute. Rupert Murdoch is the media elite. His Sixth Avenue office, lined with shelves devoted to dead-tree properties like London’s The Sun and muted video monitors tuned to news channels including News Corp.’s Fox and rival CNN, sits squarely within jaywalking distance of NBC, CBS, Time Warner, McGraw-Hill, and Viacom.

But these days, midtown Manhattan’s valley of old media dinosaurs is besieged by a Cambrian explosion of digitally empowered life-forms: podcasters, bloggers, burners, P2P buccaneers, mashup artists, phonecam paparazzi. Viewers are vanishing, shareholders are in revolt, advertisers are Googling for the exit.

Twilight of the moguls, right? Not for the T. rex of mass culture. "We’re looking at the ultimate opportunity," Murdoch says. "The Internet is media’s golden age."

Of course, someone juggling $60 billion worth of TV studios, printing presses, and broadcast satellites would say that. But Murdoch has been putting his money where his mouth is -– and it is his money: His family controls almost a third of News Corp.’s voting shares.

Over the past year, he has spent nearly $1.5 billion on new-breed Internet companies, including online communities devoted to gaming, sports, and movies, plus a startling eruption of youthful energy known as MySpace.

And he has put his lieutenants on notice: The days of top-down, force-fed, one-size-fits-all media are over. The new imperative is to deliver precisely what audiences want, when and where they want it.

How or even whether News Corp. can survive this cold dawn is an open question – Wall Street certainly has its doubts. But the man who built the world’s only truly global media company has a classically entrepreneurial answer. "We’ll figure it out," he says, flashing his cat-that-ate-the-canary grin.

One of the great things about being a self-employed billionaire mogul –- besides traveling in your own Boeing 737 and getting to play yourself on The Simpsons –- is that you don’t have to talk like a management consultant. News Corp. culture is famously seat-of-the-pants; managers who can’t live by their wits quickly fall by the wayside.

But more than that, Murdoch revels in spotting unfilled gaps and unmet needs. "Everything we’ve ever done is about giving people choices," he says. "The Net has a billion people looking for news, sports, and entertainment. Another billion are on mobile phones, and another couple of billion are coming up behind those. That’s a hell of a lot more people making choices."

Right, but how do you keep News Corp. at the center of their decisions? How do you produce planetary hits in a world of umpteen million YouTube videos? How do you find the next Bart Simpson if he’s being drawn in someone’s garage?

Tips On How To Redesign A Large and Dynamic Web Site

I was already to post a new story here when I open-up a new email message and somehow I found this article.

Well, finally I found that Yuri is a consultant for MyNeatSite, a company specializing in redesigning web sites. They make your site load faster by optimizing images or use CSS. Lastly, they also make your site more user-friendly.

Why do I change my mind and post Yuri's article?

To be honest, I have a direct interest into content management systems (CMS) and web marketing 2.0.

For couple of years I try to find a way to develop one of my ideas. Everytime I fail because I couldn't find a way to do things the way I want.

Now, with the development of CMS, it's much easier. So pay attention to the next article!

It's short, but full of good thoughts...

Redesigning large dynamic web sites can either be easy or problematic. Read how you can redesign your large web site easily and efficiently.

How hard is your site to change?

Before you actually make any changes to a site, you need to understand how hard it is to adjust your site at all. There may be several types of large sites:

a) large static sites using pages with .html extension

b) large sites with Server Side Includes without a CMS

c) sites with a content management system (CMS):
- using templates for layout

- using built-in layout
These site types are different in terms of how easy it is to change the site look. Let's see how exactly it works for them.

a) Static sites

Large static sites, usually on HTML, are quite rare. If you want to change such a site easily, you'll have to use Server Side Includes and any programming, if needed.

To redesign your site with SSI to the site, you'll have to do the following:

- create a new layout, which includes all necessary design blocks and content

- divide the page into parts: the includes

- introduce the Server Side Includes code into every page on your site

Though this may be hard work, but it is required for the site to be edited easily. Otherwise, you'll be editing every page on your site manually forever.

You can always install a CMS for an often updated web site: it'll require putting all the content in the database, though.

b) Sites without CMS

Large sites with Server Side Includes but without CMS are quite common.

To change the site design, you just need to create a design and divide it between includes.

Most likely, you'll need to create the includes from scratch and readjust the pages accordingly.

c) Large sites with CMS

These sites are the most popular, because, usually, large sites require extensive efforts to maintain them.

There are a lot of CMS's, but, generally, they can be divided into two groups: customizable and non-customizable.

Sites with customizable CMS

Web sites with adjustable CMS can be edited. How easily it can be done depends on the content management system.

Some use templates (default visual layouts, used for different types of pages), some change the page look with the help of a user interface.

Basically, it may be best to use a CMS on templates to be able to customize the layout.

To redesign such a site, simply redesign the templates your CMS uses to change the site appearance.

Sites with non-customizable CMS

On the other hand, sites on CMS that can not change visual layout should be best redesigned with the help of a better CMS, or, if the site is small enough, just with Server Side Includes.

This simply means that the site layout needs to be designed from scratch and the site owner has gained a chance of setting up an easily-customizable back-end solution for his web site.

Summing up

In short, how a large site can be redesigned depends on how it was built. If it is possible to adjust a template layout, so much the better.

However, if a CMS can't change the site appearance, it'd be best to replace the CMS with an easily customizable CMS, which is also web standards compliant (on CSS).
